I was wrong...

Tricked you. Not about anything important.

After seeing the public response to Pope John Paul II's death, I am ready to concede that he may have been a more influencial person than Bono. I have been amazed at how strongly his passing has impacted people throughout the world.

An interesting article coming from the Pope's passing and his moral stances while alive can be found in Rich Lowry's posting "Theocrat's for Freedom" http://www.nationalreview.com/lowry/lowry200504050742.asp

Exerpt:

The word "theocrat" is a rapidly emerging swearword in American politics. If someone opposes gay marriage, or supports giving sustenance to Terri Schiavo, or has any strong moral convictions that inform his policy positions, he is a "theocrat" who secretly wishes to begin burning people at the stake. How odd, then, that this week we mourn the death and celebrate the life of a man, Pope John Paul II, who had "theocratic" trappings and convictions and yet is universally regarded as a great warrior for freedom.

Actually, it is not odd at all. Many of the great leaps of freedom in the West have come at the instigation of Christian believers. Their faith lends them an unbending belief in human dignity and an audacious hope in success against all odds that sweep aside excuses for inaction.

I recommend you follow the link and read his thoughts. Lowry is my favorite
of the right wing American political writers. He's got his slant, but he articulates it well and has some good insights.

Back to my Bono thoughts, my sister suggested to me that Oprah is more influencial than Bono. Before you tar and feather the poor girl, she wasn't suggesting it was a good thing. Rather, she was pointing out that what Oprah says or suggests (as in her book club, etc.) a large segment of American population follows blindly. I would add
that this segment is about 99.5% female. I sure hope that Oprah's not as influencial in world affairs as is Bono. I don't think she's got much of importance to add to society. Just a lot of new age half-thoughts.

Out.

B, I have to disagree with your assertations regarding Oprah Winfrey. Not only has she been directly involved with an increase of literary appreciation thru her book club, which, obviously, directly affects literacy, she has done much to bring important societal issues to light. Perhaps you should read her shows' transcripts or, gasp!, actually watch one of her segments. I am not able to view many of her shows in toto, but have appreciated the parts I have seen. Some of the topics, off the top of my head, have been about public school teachers, child abduction, obesity, the dangers of teen sexuality, dangerous relationships, heroic acts, mental health... the list goes on. Sure, the woman gratifies herself by airing highlights of her lavish 50th b'day party, etc.; but she also is very generous with her money, often giving expensive gifts to audience members or guests.
Whether you like it or not, she, like Donald Trump, though at times ridiculous, is certainly a part of the current Western cultural identity, and can not be written off as inconsequential.

P.S. Oprah is my heroine for not only having run a marathon, but for building a billion-dollar entertainment company--no small feat for an African-American born during the civil rights era, especially a woman.

I like Oprah. :) Today she wore a dress made out of metal yarn and interviewed Narcisso Rodriguez. Forget Bono. (Go ahead, tar and feather me. I still maintain that U2 is for old people. :)

Oprah doesn't know what she believes or thinks. She believes in whatever is new. She is as lost as most ppl. She is a do-gooder for sure. She even has a village in the 3rd world country named after her that she has adopted, the road to hell is paved with many good intentions.
